Kerry Park: Why I Keep Bringing Seattle Visitors to This View

Kerry Park always hits. I’ve shared the view more than once because it’s one of those places that still makes me stop and look, even when I’m here with another tour group.

If you want a photo with the Space Needle in Seattle’s skyline, this is the stop I’d put on your list. The video below gives you a preview, but standing there and taking in the whole scene is the reason to go.

What makes the view work?

Kerry Park sits on the south side of Queen Anne Hill, looking toward downtown. The Space Needle stands in front of the skyline, Elliott Bay opens out to the side, and Mount Rainier can appear in the distance when visibility cooperates.

That perspective is different from being on top of an observation deck. Here, you’re looking at the city from a neighborhood. It helps put the landmarks you’ve been visiting into the same picture.

For background on the viewpoint and its location, see the Kerry Park overview.

Don’t make Mount Rainier a requirement

When the mountain is out, the view is hard to beat. But it isn’t something I can promise for a particular tour time. Clouds and visibility decide that.

I’d still make the stop for the city view. Look at the water, the shape of the skyline, and where the Space Needle sits in relation to downtown. If Rainier makes an appearance, that’s a bonus worth taking another photo for.

Give yourself a few minutes without the camera

Take the group photo first if that’s what everyone wants. Then put the phone down for a moment. I know that sounds funny coming from someone who posts videos of the place, but the view deserves more than checking whether you got the shot.

For photos, try a wide frame for the whole scene and a tighter one for your group. Leave room for other visitors at the viewpoint, and be considerate of the surrounding neighborhood when arriving and leaving.

Kerry Park is a compact stop. I generally allow about 15 minutes on a City Tour, with the actual pace depending on the group and the day.
