Pike Place Market Downstairs: The Shops You Shouldn’t Walk Past

If your Pike Place visit ends at the fish counter and the big neon sign, you’re leaving a lot of the Market unexplored. My advice is simple: follow the signs downstairs and give yourself time to wander.

I made the video below because the DownUnder shops deserve a place on your Seattle itinerary. This is where a quick shopping stop can turn into an afternoon of comics, collectibles, and things you had no idea you wanted.

There’s a whole Market below the Market

Pike Place is a nine-acre historic district with ten levels, according to the Market’s visitor guide. It takes more than a lap around the main arcade to get a feel for it.

The lower levels reward a different kind of visit. Instead of racing between famous food stops, you can browse, talk to shopkeepers, and follow whatever catches your attention. Leave room for that in your plans.

Start with Golden Age Collectables

One stop I call out in my video is Golden Age Collectables. The Market’s own listing identifies it as the world’s oldest comic shop, founded in 1961, and places it on the fourth level of the DownUnder.

You don’t have to be a serious comic collector to enjoy a look around. The shop carries comics, games, movie memorabilia, and pop-culture collectibles. If someone in your group has been patiently following everyone else’s food itinerary, this might be their stop.

Give yourself time to actually browse

I’d leave at least a couple of hours for a first Market visit, and longer if you want a sit-down meal. That’s my planning suggestion, not a required visit length. With one hour, pick a few priorities and accept that you’ll be coming back.

Use the Market’s official map to find shops and accessible routes between levels. Check the hours for any business you’re especially excited to visit. An early walk through the Market can be lovely, but it doesn’t mean every downstairs shop will already be open.

Fit the Market into your Seattle day

A good option is to see the wider city first and finish at Pike Place for your own lunch and exploring. That lets you spend your Market time on the things your group actually enjoys.

Our private Seattle City Tour can be planned with a Market drop-off. Tell us that’s how you’d like to end the day so we can build the route around it. Market exploring after drop-off is self-guided.
