The Best Time to Visit Pike Place Market

My favorite time at Pike Place Market is the morning. Before the sidewalks fill up, you get to watch the Market wake up: vendors setting up, fresh food coming out, and it feels more like the working neighborhood it's always been.

That said, showing up early and showing up when the places you want are actually open aren't the same thing. Plan around what you want to do.

For a quieter visit, go in the morning

The Market itself says mornings before noon are usually less crowded. If you like taking photos, grabbing breakfast and seeing vendors set up, it's a great time to go without getting swept along with the crowd.

Just don't expect every shop to be open at sunrise. Some breakfast spots and fresh-food vendors open early, but most of the Market is active from about 9 to 5. For a first visit with a mix of atmosphere and shopping, aim for around 9 or 10.

When is it busiest?

Late morning through the afternoon gets busy, especially in summer and when cruise ships are in. The Market says Thursday through Monday are its fullest days. That's not a reason to skip it. A busy Market can be fun, just plan for it.

If you're with older family members, little kids or anyone who can't stand for long, avoid the main aisles at their most crowded. Take breaks and pick a few stops instead of trying to see every corner.

How long do you need?

An hour gets you a quick intro, not a deep visit. Food counters, independent shops, flowers, the fish stalls and the lower levels all take time.

If it's your first time and you like to snack, shop and wander, give yourself a couple hours if you can. If you only have an hour, pick the part that matters most to you and do it well.

Don't skip the lower levels

It's easy to see the crowd under the Public Market Center sign and think that's it. It's not. Head downstairs. The lower levels are full of interesting shops and a different side of the Market. I made a guide to the downstairs shops, including the comic and collectibles spots a lot of people walk right past.

Thinking about the line at the original Starbucks? Here's my take on whether it's worth it.

Adding the Market to a Cascade tour

Our standard three-hour City Tour focuses on viewpoints and neighborhoods, and we can finish at the Market or adjust a stop when it works. Our four-hour City and Pike Place Market Tour includes a full hour to explore the Market on your own. We don't do guided Market tours.

If you're here before or after an Alaska cruise, tell us when you arrive and where you need to finish. The best plan is the one that fits the day you actually have.
