Is the Seattle Aquarium Worth Visiting? A Local Guide’s Take

Short answer: yes, especially if you've got kids or the weather's doing its Seattle thing. The Aquarium has grown a lot along with the new waterfront, and there's more to it now than a quick look at a few tanks.

What you'll actually see

The original buildings on Pier 59 and Pier 60 focus on Pacific Northwest sea life: Puget Sound, the Salish Sea, sea otters, harbor seals and the animals living right off our shore.

Then there's the Ocean Pavilion, which opened in 2024. It's a totally different world, with tropical reef habitats from the Indo-Pacific, sharks, rays and bright reef fish. Going from the cold Northwest water to the reef is a cool contrast.

One ticket covers all of it

A regular ticket gets you into Pier 59, Pier 60 and the Ocean Pavilion. There are two entrances, one at Pier 59 and one at the Ocean Pavilion, and they scan your ticket at both. Tickets are timed, so book your entry time online ahead, especially on busy days.

Even if you don't go in, walk past the Ocean Pavilion. You can see into the big reef habitat through the window outside.

Is it good for kids?

Yes. There's enough to keep younger kids into it without the day feeling like a field trip. Go at their pace and follow whatever they're excited about instead of trying to see every exhibit.

How I'd fit it into a Seattle day

The Aquarium is right on the downtown waterfront, just below Pike Place Market, so the two pair really well. Do the Market in the morning, walk down to the water and make the Aquarium your indoor stop.

Aquarium admission isn't part of our standard three-hour City Tour. What the tour is good for is getting your bearings: neighborhoods, viewpoints and the stories around the big attractions. Then you can spend as long as you want at places like the Aquarium on your own.

Thinking about doing a few paid attractions? Here's my take on whether Seattle CityPASS is worth it.

Check current tickets and hours on the Seattle Aquarium's planning page before you go.
