Great Wheel or Space Needle? Why I'd Pick the Wheel's View

Possibly a controversial Seattle tour guide opinion: I'd take the Great Wheel's view over the Space Needle's. Both are good. If you only have time for one, this is why I lean toward the wheel.

What each one is

The Seattle Great Wheel stands 175 feet tall at the end of Pier 57 on the downtown waterfront. It opened in 2012, built right out over Elliott Bay. You ride in an enclosed gondola for three full turns, which takes about 10 to 20 minutes depending on the crowd.

The Space Needle is Seattle's classic, with its observation level around 500 feet up at Seattle Center. You get a full 360-degree view and more time up top if you want it. Seattle Center is one of the usual outside stops on our 3-Hour City Tour.

Why I'd pick the wheel

  • You can see the Space Needle. From the Needle, the one thing you can't see is the Needle. From the wheel, it's right there in the skyline.

  • You're over the water. Ferries, Elliott Bay and the waterfront are right below you. It feels closer to the city.

  • It's quick. Ten or twenty minutes and you're back on the pier. Easy to fit in after Pike Place.

  • Room for your group. Each gondola holds up to eight people, so a small group fits in one.

  • It's fun at night. The wheel has over half a million LED lights and runs light shows on weekend evenings.

When the Space Needle makes more sense

If height is the point, the Needle wins easily. On a clear day you get a better shot at Mount Rainier and the Olympics, and the glass floor is a thrill. Some people have wanted to go up the Needle for years, and that's a good enough reason. My Space Needle tickets guide covers your options.

And if you mostly want the classic photo with the Needle and the skyline, Kerry Park gives you that for free.

A little Pier 57 history

There's a reason it's called Miners Landing. In 1897, 68 miners arrived at a nearby dock with more than a ton of gold. The Klondike Gold Rush was on, and Seattle got busy selling supplies to everyone who wanted to be next. Today Miners Landing has the wheel, a carousel, an arcade and a few seafood spots, and walking the pier is free.

Tips for riding

  • Check hours before you go. They vary by season.

  • Compare ticket prices on the official site and any links you find, including the TikTok GO link on my video.

  • Go near sunset if you can. The bay looks great and the lights come on after.

  • Pair it with Pike Place Market and the Aquarium. They're all a short walk apart.

Fitting it into a tour

Our 3-Hour City Tour usually includes Kerry Park and an outside stop at Seattle Center, under the Space Needle. The wheel works best as something you do on your own after. Ask us to end your tour near Pike Place or the waterfront and you can walk right over. Attraction tickets aren't included.

Quick answers

How tall is the Seattle Great Wheel? 175 feet.

How long is the ride? Three full turns, about 10 to 20 minutes.

Is the Great Wheel better than the Space Needle? For views over the water with the Needle in the shot, I think so. For height and a full 360, go up the Needle.
